Performance and Hardware

Starting with Exynos 980, it comes with octa-core CPU with 2x Cortex-A77 cores clocked @2.2 GHz and remaining 6x cores point to 1.8GHz. On the other hands, Exynos 9820 packs 2x custom Mangoose M4 cores point @2.73GHz, 2x Cortex-A75 cores @2.31 GHz and other 4x Cortex-A55 cores clock at 1.9 GHz. Finally, Exynos 9825 also uses the 2x custom Mangoose M4 cores clocked at 2.73 GHz, 2x Cortex-A75 clocked at 2.4 GHz and remaining 4x Cortex-A55 cores clocks at 1.9GHz.

In addition, Exynos 980 and 9820 are fabricated on TSMS’s 8nm node, while, the Exynos 9825 is manufactured on the latest highly power-efficient TSMS 7nm EUV node. Undoubtedly, Exynos 9825 dominates the CPU list and 9820 is producing close results. But Exynos 980 lacks behind with a measurable margin. Exynos 980 has comparatively less powerful Mali-G76 MP5 GPU. The other two are fully up to date with the latest and more powerful Mali-G76 MP12 GPU. All the necessary API support is available to all three chips, including OpenGL ES 3.2, Vulkan 1.1, OpenCL 2.0 and DirectX 12.

Display and Storage

Exynos 9820 and Exynos 9820 both can hold up to 2160 x 3840 pixels UHD+ display for smaller devices. Subsequently, Maximum support for Exynos 980 is up to 1440 x 3360 pixels WQHD+ display with HDR10+ content support. It can go up to 2400 x 3840 pixels WQUXGA resolution for the relatively bigger display devices. These chipsets have a slight advantage over the Exynos 980. But it seems this is designed for the mid-range devices, so QHD+ resolution should be sufficient.

Nevertheless, All three matches the current industry standards with eMMC 5.1 and UFS 2.1 flash storage support. Additionally, all three are well capable of running up to LPPDR4X RAM. At least in the storage department, all three should perform equally if the company utilizes the maximum potential.

Camera and Connectivity

The Exynos 980 supports 108MP single camera or dual 20MP + 20MP cameras, other two arrive with 22MP single camera or dual 16MP + 16MP camera. Looking at the camera specs, the Exynos 980 is specially designed for the higher pixels counts. Recently Samsung and Xiaomi have jointly announced a new 108MP camera sensor.

We can see few 108MP camera smartphones using the Exynos 980 chipset from Samsung. In the camera department, Exynos 980 seems to outperform the other two. But it would be interesting to see its optimizations and stability in real usage.

Since Exynos 980 focuses on 5G, it provides up to 2.55 Gbps download and 1.28 Gbps upload speed in sub-6GHz 5G band. It has built-in 5G modem, which gives us assurance to provide enhanced power efficiency and affordability. Comparing the LTE speeds, Ut can provide up to 1Gbps download and 200Mbps upload speed.

Exynos 9820 and Exynos 9825 both are well capable of providing up to 2 Gbps download and 316 Mbps upload speed withe LTE Advanced Pro modem. There is an external Exynos 5100 5G modem for enhanced speed. Other connectivity options include Bluetooth 5.0, USB 3.1 support, and WiFi 802.11a/b/g.

Exynos 9825 GeekBench Scores

In Antutu, Exynos 9820 scores 3,62,292 points and Exynos 9825 takes a significant lead with 4,42,568 points. Even though Exynos 980 is a new chipset, we don’t enough data available for benchmark scores. We will update the list as soon as we get the data.

Conclusion – Which one is better?

Frankly speaking, Exynos 980 is not a flagship chipset. It could be a good replacement for the Exynos 9610, but not even close to the Exynos 9820 and 9825 chipsets when it compared to the onboard specs. On the other hands, Exynos 9820 and 9825 are a close competitor to each other.

But Exynos 9825 somehow manages to take lead on Exynos 9820, thanks to the slightly overclocked CPU and next-generation 7nm EUV node by TMSC. Wrapping it up, Exynos 9825 is the final winner and Exynos 9820 and Exynos 980 follows it.
