36 Dere Types in Anime [Explained]

Like people in everyday life, anime has characters who have different personality traits.

Just like psychologists might categorize humans’ personality traits in some way, in anime they’re organized into what are called dere types.

For those who are already at least somewhat familiar with dere types, you’ve probably already head of the term tsundere.

The tsundere type you can find in most anime.

If you’ve heard of some, or heard of none, this article is a resource to get to know all of the dere types out there.

We’ll also discuss some of the character names and anime that the dere type might have originated from to give some context on what some types of deres might look like.

Let’s dive in.

#1 Tsundere

Tsundere is the dere type put forward by most people when you talk about dere types, both in anime and in real life.

This dere type is characterized by having two contrasting personality traits that switch back and forth between each other.

The tsundere typically has an outer personality trait of being cold or harsh while having a cute, sweet inner personality.

For example, let’s say there was a guy who was quiet and didn’t like to be around people much.

However, if he’s around his crush/love interest for long enough, he warms up to them so much that instead of being an introvert he becomes very outgoing with how affectionate he can get towards them sometimes. That would be considered the tragic version of the tsundere dere type.

Tsunderes are the dere types that people typically most associate with dere types, which is why they’re at #1.

Examples include Kyou Souma (from Fruits Basket) and Kurisu Makise (from Steins; Gate).

#2 Kuudere

Kuudere is a dere type characterized by having a cold exterior and tend to be more calm and collected.

The kuudere does not warm up to others easily, but will usually open up to their love interest if they have them in their life for long enough. In other words, kuuderes need time before showing their affectionate side.

Like tsunderes, the kuudere also has an inner personality trait that you can see from time to time.

In this case, it’s more of a dere type that is shown by the character, instead of having it switch back and forth between two contrasting personality traits.

Examples include Rei Ayanami (from Neon Genesis Evangelion) and Nagisa Furukawa (from Clannad).

#3 Yandere

What’s very different about yandere dere types are their violent tendencies, which tend to be toward people they have feelings for.

The yandere will do anything to keep the person they have feelings for apart from others so that they can be with them alone.

Their violence is not just limited to just hurting people either, among other things they may go as far as trying to lash out at whoever stands in their way.

And yes, the yandere dere type has an inner dere side too.

An example of a yandere would be Yuno Gasai (from Mirai Nikki).

#4 Dandere

Danderes tend to be kind, but shy, timid, and anxious.

They tend to speak only when spoken to and may get embarrassed in those situations.
